8/7/2023

Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) was excited to participate in the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (ADLM) 2023 Annual Meeting and Expo (formerly AACC). A celebration of ADLM’s 75th anniversary, the conference brought together over 70K participants from clinical chemistry, diagnostics, lab management, and other laboratory science areas.

CLSI had a booth in the exposition center for fielding questions, providing technical support for users and members, and showcasing new content. Also participating were more than 78 CLSI-affiliated subject matter experts who presented at the conference. Some highlights included:

“Emerging Technologies for the Next-Generation of Point-of-Care Testing,” by Peter Luppa, MD, Guido Freckmann, MD, and CLSI’s President-Elect, James Nichols, PhD, DABCC, FAACC. Molecular detection of infectious agents, continuous glucose measurement, and how point-of-care testing technologies are meeting evolving patient needs was discussed during this session.

“High-Sensitivity Cardiac Troponin: Updates on Educational Recommendations from the IFCC Committee on Clinical Applications of Cardiac Biomarkers” was presented by Peter Kavsak, PhD, FCACB, FAACC, FCCS Allan Jaffe, MD Kristin Aakre, MD, PhD Louise Cullen, MBBS(Hon), FACEM, PhD. This session provided timely updates to educational recommendations from the IFCC C-CB pertaining to high-sensitivity cardiac troponin (hs-cTn) assays and their role in clinical practice.

“Emerging Trends in Laboratory Medicine: Excellence from the Global Community” was presented by Heungsup Sung, MD, PhD, Katherine Hayden, FRCPath, CSci, EuSpLM, BSc, and Stephen Master, MD, PhD, FAACC. This President-Invited session focused on pandemic preparedness, environmental sustainability, and best practices for machine learning. Partners include the Association for Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine, the Korean Society of Laboratory Medicine, and the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine.

“Establishment and Implementation of Test Methods into the Clinical Laboratory Using CLSI’s Test Life Phase Model,” by Paula Ladwig, MS, MLS (ASCP), J. Rex Astles, PhD, FAACC, Christopher Dailey, PhD, and Zhimin Cao, MD, PhD, DABCC, FAACC demonstrated how to meet requirements using best practices to ensure quality in the establishment of LDTs and the implementation of both LDTs and FDA-cleared or approved test methods into a laboratory using CLSI's Test Life Phases Model.

“Solving Problems and Resolving Challenges in Point-of-Care Testing,” with Peggy Mann, MS, MT (ASCP), CPP and Jeanne Mumford, BS, MLS (ASCP). This hands-on course focused on identifying problems and challenges faced in point-of-care testing (POCT). This includes the key components of setting up a training program, administering regulatory-focused competency assessment, vendor and program integration of quality management systems, and maintaining regulatory compliance in the face of changes.
